The Buckling Spring

Within the last 6 weeks, I couldn’t spend any spare time on the Technical Manual project. As we are in the middle of the Christmas holidays, I could take a break and continue writing.

I spent some time on getting the keycap font under the microscope (metaphorically speaking) and started to describe the reason why it isn’t Helvetica for the main legend but took its fair share of inspiration from it. The name of the original font is unknown (if there even exists a name for it).

The re-creation by David Zimmerman is stunning and every detail is perfectly re-produced for the Brand New Model F keycaps but also for those of us, who are interested in the IBM keyboard history.

It won’t be the last word about the font as it plays an important role in the overall design language of the Model F Keyboard.
